Last Week

Our last week wasn't so great... I will write a seperate post on it sometime this week, but basically we were at the vet's again. Africa might have EPI (Endocrinologic Pancreatic Insufficiency), basically meaning her pancreas is not working like it should... The good thing is, that it is easily treatable, but like the hypothyroidism, Afri will need medication for the rest of her life. But like said, I will go into more detail about that later!

Viime viikko ei ollut kovin mukava... Aion kirjoittaa asiasta oman postauksen, sillä muuten tämä olisi hullunpitkä. Lyhyesti sanottuna kuitenkin, olimme viime viikolla jälleen eläinlääkärin luona käymässä, ja saimme tietää, että Africalla on ehkä haiman vajaatoiminta eli EPI, tarkoittaen nimensä mukaisesti sitä, ettei haima toimi ihan niinkuin pitäisi... EPI on krooninen, mutta onneksi lääkityksellä hoidettavissa kuten kilpparikin, mutta Afri tarvitsee siis lääkitystä tätäkin varten koko loppuelämänsä. Kuten sanottu, kirjoitan asiasta myöhemmin vielä tarkemmin!

Ok, onto more positive things; for one, Africa is doing waaaay better! She has so much energy and is happy and more like herself. Her bald tail is bald no more, it is still rather thin, but we're getting there.:) And as the pictures might already reveal, we finally got to go to our forest, which has been way too long! But now finally, as of last week, construction in Heidelberg has stopped for the most part and things are more or less back to normal. 

No niin, eli sitten vähän positiivisempiin asioihin, kuten siihen, että Afri voi paaaljon paremmin! Afrilla on hirmupaljon energiaa, on iloinen ja enemmän oma itsensä. Kalju häntä on enää muisto vain (häntä on edelleen melko ohut, mutta kyllä se siitä!). Kuten kuvista voi päätellä, pääsimme jälleen rakkaaseen metsäämme ihan liian pitkästä aikaa! Mutta nyt vihdoinkin, Heidelbergissä ei enää ole tietöitä, joten rakentaminen on enemmän tai vähemmän loppunut, ja asiat ovat palautuneet normaaleiksi.

Afri has showed clear signs that she really wants to go to the forest to let off some steam. But because of the forest paths being barricaded, we haven't been able to do that for the past few weeks. Yesterday she was the happiest dog in the world and we had so much fun wandering in the forest and playing fetch! Afri has never particularly been into fetching (she does run after the stick, but usually doesn't bother bringing it back haha), but on Monday she was bringing me back every single stick I threw. She was really hyperactive and overexcited, I tried getting her to sit for a moment so I could take a facial shot of her, but no go haha. This little missy was so overwired, that she just sat there staring at me with the most annoyed expression and barking very frustratedly ("Why are you not throwing that stick????!! This is boorrrriiing!"). Thus, a lot of the pictures here are taken from further away, because Afri just wanted to run.

Africalla on selvästi ollut tarvetta päästä metsään, juuri tuon energisyyden vuoksi. Mutta koska metsän tiet olivat muutaman viimeisen viikon aikana blokattu, emme päässeet sinne. Nyt vihdoinkin eilen käppäiltiin metsälle ja neiti pääsi riehumaan kunnolla. Vaeltelimme metsässä ja noudettiin keppiä, Afri oli aivan onnessaan! Yleensä keppiä heitettäessä, Afri kyllä juoksee sen perään, muttei kyllä tuo takaisin heh. Eilen sensijaan Africa toi jokaikisen kepin, jonka sille heitin. :) Yritin epätoivoisesti ottaa neidistä naamakuvan, mutta Afri oli eri mieltä! Se oli niin ylivirittyneessä tilassa, että se tuijotti mua erittäin närkästyneesti ja haukkui turhautuneena ("Miksi et heitä sitä keppiä???! Ihan tylsää istua tässä!!"). Tämän vuoksi aika monet kuvat on otettu kauempaa, koska Afri ei oikein halunnut pysyä paikallaan.

Because at the moment, Afri has so much energy and is eager to do things, I've started again thinking about the agility course. :)

Koska neitosella on tällä hetkellä niin hirveästi energiaa ja selvästi taas halua tehdä kaikkea mahdollista, olen ruvennut miettimään taas sitä agility kurssia. :)

Poor Baby

Pictures taken today. The eye is still swollen, but doing much better!

Yesterday we went to the vet again because of poor Africa's eyes. Her eyes were red and swollen and there was slimy yellow discharge everywhere. Poor baby!

Eilen käytiin jälleen eläinlääkärin luona Afri paran silmien vuoksi. Silmät olivat todella punaiset ja turvonneet ja täynnä inhaa keltaista mönjää. Pikku raukka! 

 There's a whole lot of construction going on in the center of Heidelberg, meaning trams and busses aren't going as they should. I for one had to walk to class, as my usual tram never came and another one stopped after just one stop. The busses didn't go either, so in order to make the vet on time, I took a cab home to get Afri and went to the vet.

Heidelbergin keskustassa on tällä hetkellä tietyöt käynnissä, mikä tarkoittaa sitä etteivät bussit ja ratikat kulje normaalisti. Jouduin kävelemään kouluun, sillä tavanomainen ratikkani ei koskaan saapunut ja toinen taas pysähtyi yhden pysäkin jälkeen. Bussit eivät myöskään oikein kunnolla liikkuneet, joten koulun jälkeen oli pakko napata taksi kotiin ja ottaa Afri kyytiin mukaan, että ehdittiin ajoissa eläinlääkärille.

She was horrified when she saw Afri's eyes, as we had just been there 2 days ago and her eyes were perfectly fine then. The vet took a swab of Afri's eyes and at the end of this week we'll find out what caused the infection. She suspected that it's because of staph bacteria. Now Afri's getting her eyes "gelled" 3 times a day, which had considerably improved them this morning. The redness was almost gone! Success! 

Eläinlääkäri oli aika shokissa nähtyään Afri raukan silmät. Vastahan me oltiin oltu siellä pari päivää aiemmin, jolloin silmissä ei ollut mitään vikaa. Silmistä otettiin näyte ja tämän viikon loppupuolella pitäisi selvitä tulehduksen aiheuttaja. Lääkäri epäili stafylokokkia. Nyt Afrin silmiä "geelataan" 3 kertaa päivässä, josta on ollut jo aika kivasti apua.:) Punaisuus esimerkiksi on jo melkein hävinnyt! Jee! 

Can I please go sleep now?

Afri's return to Heidelberg hasn't really started out in the best way, but I'm sure all will be good very soon.:) (fingers crossed)

African paluu Heidelbergiin ei alkanut kaikkein parhaimmalla mahdollisella tavalla, mutta uskon että pian kaikki on taas niinkuin pitääkin. :) 

Pahoitteluni kuvien ei niin loistavasta laadusta. Otin ne tänään aikamoisessa kiireessä pokkarillani.

Another Vet Visit

On Saturday we were at the vet for the Hypothyroidism medication. Today we're going there once again, because Afri seems to have developed some kind of infection/irritation in her eye. :( On Saturday evening her eyes were leaking, but only clear substance. It didn't look like anything bad, but I thought I'll nevertheless keep an eye on them. 

The next morning, the clear substance had turned into yellowy slimy discharge. Her eyes weren't red and didn't seem irritated, but in the evening I was looking at a zombie dog. Poor Afri, her left eye was red and her lids swollen. :(  This morning I called the vet for an appointment. Afri's other eye is also looking worse than yesterday and she is in dire need of eye drops. Scary, how fast it developed into such! Thankfully she got an appointment and let's hope it'll be fixed asap!

Lauantaina käytiin paikallisessa eläinlääkärissä kilpparilääkkeitä hakemassa. Tänään joudumme taas käymään siellä, sillä Afrilla on silmätulehdus/ärsyyntyneet. :( Lauantai-iltana African silmät olivat melko vetiset, mutta tuli ihan vaan sellasta läpinäkyvää nestettä. Silmät eivät olleet mitenkään ärsyyntyneen oloiset, mutta ajattelin pitää niitä silmällä ihan vaan varmuuden vuoksi. 

Seuraavana aamuna, neste olikin muuttunut sellaiseksi kellertäväksi mönjäksi tosin silmät eivät vieläkään vaikuttaneet mitenkään ärsyyntyneiltä. Illalla minua katsoi vuorostaan zombie koira. Afri-parka, sen vasen silmä oli ihan punainen ja turvonnut. :( Aamulla soitin eläinlääkärille ja saatiin aika varatuksi samalle päivälle. Afrin toinenkin silmä oli tänä aamuna huonomman näköinen kuin eilen, ja se on ehdottomasti silmätippojen tarpeessa. Pelottavaa, miten nopeasti silmä huononi! Peukut pystyyn, että kaikki ok eläinlääkärillä! 

Vet Visit

On Friday eve, Africa went to the vet to have her tail checked and blood sample taken to see if the baldness of her tail is due to some condition. I suspect hypothyroidism and the vet agreed with me, as the symptoms seem to fit. Afri's been recently drinking much more than usual (or well, more like a normal dog haha. Ever since she was little, she's been very bad at drinking water, unless you mix it in her food) and she's got the balding tail. Hypothyroidism is mostly found in older dogs, but it is also more common amongst Hovawarts...

Perjantai iltana Africa lähti siis eläinlääkärin vastaanotolle hännän tsekkausta ja verikokeita varten. Itse rupesin epäilemään kilpirauhasen vajaatoimintaa, sillä tyypillisiä oireita ovat juurikin kaljuuntuminen ja lisääntynyt veden juonti. Eläinlääkäri oli samaa mieltä, ja epäili, että se natsaisi hyvin noiden oireiden kanssa. KRVT on yleisesti ottaen vanhempien koirien ongelma, mutta sitä esiintyy paljon Hovawarteilla...

On Wednesday we should receive the blood test results and find out (hopefully) what's been causing this. The "good" thing about Hypothyroidism, is the fact that the medication is rather cheap and wont affet the dog's life in a negative way. Afri will have to eat meds everyday or the rest of her life, but will be able to live normally.

Keskiviikkona meidän pitäisi siis saada verikokeen tulokset ja saada toivon mukaan tietoa, mikä on aiheuttanut hännän kaljuuntumista. "Hyvä asia" Kilpparissa on se, että sen ei pitäisi mitenkään radikaalisti vaikuttaa koiran elämään ja lisäksi lääkitys on edullista. Afri joutuu syömään lääkkeitä päivittäin koko loppuelämänsä.
