Last Week

Our last week wasn't so great... I will write a seperate post on it sometime this week, but basically we were at the vet's again. Africa might have EPI (Endocrinologic Pancreatic Insufficiency), basically meaning her pancreas is not working like it should... The good thing is, that it is easily treatable, but like the hypothyroidism, Afri will need medication for the rest of her life. But like said, I will go into more detail about that later!

Viime viikko ei ollut kovin mukava... Aion kirjoittaa asiasta oman postauksen, sillä muuten tämä olisi hullunpitkä. Lyhyesti sanottuna kuitenkin, olimme viime viikolla jälleen eläinlääkärin luona käymässä, ja saimme tietää, että Africalla on ehkä haiman vajaatoiminta eli EPI, tarkoittaen nimensä mukaisesti sitä, ettei haima toimi ihan niinkuin pitäisi... EPI on krooninen, mutta onneksi lääkityksellä hoidettavissa kuten kilpparikin, mutta Afri tarvitsee siis lääkitystä tätäkin varten koko loppuelämänsä. Kuten sanottu, kirjoitan asiasta myöhemmin vielä tarkemmin!

Ok, onto more positive things; for one, Africa is doing waaaay better! She has so much energy and is happy and more like herself. Her bald tail is bald no more, it is still rather thin, but we're getting there.:) And as the pictures might already reveal, we finally got to go to our forest, which has been way too long! But now finally, as of last week, construction in Heidelberg has stopped for the most part and things are more or less back to normal. 

No niin, eli sitten vähän positiivisempiin asioihin, kuten siihen, että Afri voi paaaljon paremmin! Afrilla on hirmupaljon energiaa, on iloinen ja enemmän oma itsensä. Kalju häntä on enää muisto vain (häntä on edelleen melko ohut, mutta kyllä se siitä!). Kuten kuvista voi päätellä, pääsimme jälleen rakkaaseen metsäämme ihan liian pitkästä aikaa! Mutta nyt vihdoinkin, Heidelbergissä ei enää ole tietöitä, joten rakentaminen on enemmän tai vähemmän loppunut, ja asiat ovat palautuneet normaaleiksi.

Afri has showed clear signs that she really wants to go to the forest to let off some steam. But because of the forest paths being barricaded, we haven't been able to do that for the past few weeks. Yesterday she was the happiest dog in the world and we had so much fun wandering in the forest and playing fetch! Afri has never particularly been into fetching (she does run after the stick, but usually doesn't bother bringing it back haha), but on Monday she was bringing me back every single stick I threw. She was really hyperactive and overexcited, I tried getting her to sit for a moment so I could take a facial shot of her, but no go haha. This little missy was so overwired, that she just sat there staring at me with the most annoyed expression and barking very frustratedly ("Why are you not throwing that stick????!! This is boorrrriiing!"). Thus, a lot of the pictures here are taken from further away, because Afri just wanted to run.

Africalla on selvästi ollut tarvetta päästä metsään, juuri tuon energisyyden vuoksi. Mutta koska metsän tiet olivat muutaman viimeisen viikon aikana blokattu, emme päässeet sinne. Nyt vihdoinkin eilen käppäiltiin metsälle ja neiti pääsi riehumaan kunnolla. Vaeltelimme metsässä ja noudettiin keppiä, Afri oli aivan onnessaan! Yleensä keppiä heitettäessä, Afri kyllä juoksee sen perään, muttei kyllä tuo takaisin heh. Eilen sensijaan Africa toi jokaikisen kepin, jonka sille heitin. :) Yritin epätoivoisesti ottaa neidistä naamakuvan, mutta Afri oli eri mieltä! Se oli niin ylivirittyneessä tilassa, että se tuijotti mua erittäin närkästyneesti ja haukkui turhautuneena ("Miksi et heitä sitä keppiä???! Ihan tylsää istua tässä!!"). Tämän vuoksi aika monet kuvat on otettu kauempaa, koska Afri ei oikein halunnut pysyä paikallaan.

Because at the moment, Afri has so much energy and is eager to do things, I've started again thinking about the agility course. :)

Koska neitosella on tällä hetkellä niin hirveästi energiaa ja selvästi taas halua tehdä kaikkea mahdollista, olen ruvennut miettimään taas sitä agility kurssia. :)

Just Another Manic Monday

Africa's version of Scream's "Wazzup"-scene :D

Monday's usually our forest and errand day. Sadly today we couldn't go to the forest due to the woods being filled with various sorts of machines and all the usual paths being blocked and filled with "Danger, do not enter!"-signs. I'm not exactly sure what is being done, but from the sounds and looks of it, trees were being cut down. We were both a bit dissapointed with Afri, as the weather was so nice (not anymore, thanks rain!). There was a lot of construction etc. going on on our way up to the woods. The construction workers were really nice when they saw us, they stopped drilling (it was reallyreally loud!) and waited for us to pass by until they continued. So nice to see people who consider dogs' ears too as they hear that stuff 5 times louder than we do. Little things like that always make my day.:)

We ended up just hiking up towards the forest and then snaking around Weststadt. Bummer! On Sunday a 3-4 h hike is being organized and I would love to join with Afri. The medication has been working well for Afri and there have been no side effects so far.:). But she's still at a stage where we need to take it kind of easy at least for the next 2-3 weeks. Think next weekend we might be doing our own little hike somewhere close to Heidelberg. I am also planning on us doing a little weekend trip to Freiburg to visit relatives and friends. Hopefully this rain will stop soon!

The current header is dead ugly, I was messing around with it for ages until I got tired and decided to just slap this on. The outcome is not at all what I aimed for, so new proper header coming asap!

Maanantai on yleensä meidän metsä ja asioimispäivä täällä Heidelbergissä. Harmiksemme emme tänään päässeet metsään, sillä polut olivat täynnä erilaisia vempaimia ja ängetty täyteen "Hengenvaara, pääsy kielletty!"-kylttejä. En oikeastaan ole varma mitä ne siellä tekee, mutta äänestä päätellen puunkaatoa. Molemmat oltiin vähän pettyneitä, kun sää oli vielä niin kiva (ei ole tosin enää, kiitos sade!). Muutenkin mennessämme metsään päin, tiet oli täynnä kaikkea rakennusjutskaa. Rakennusmiehet olivat todella ystävällisiä, sillä he lopettivat hetkeksi poraamisen kun kävelimme ohi. Porasta tuli niin järkyttävä meteli, mikä sattui omiin korviini kuulokkeista huolimatta, saati sitten Afri-parka, joka koirana kuule sen vielä 5 kertaa kovempaa. Tuollaiset pienet asiat tekevät ainakin minun päivästäni aina iloisemman. :)

Käytiin sitten ihan vaan vaeltelemassa ylöspäin metsää kohti ja kierrellen Weststadtia. Sunnuntaina järkätään 3-4 h kivaa reittiä menevä vaellus, johon olisin mielelläni Afrin kanssa osallistunut. Lääkitys on toiminut Afrilla hyvin eikä sivuoireita ole ilmaantunut tähän mennessä.:) Siltikin Afri on vielä sellaisessa vaiheessa, että pitää ottaa vielä seuraavat pari viikkoa suht iisisti. Ensi viikonloppuna ajattelin, että voitaisiin mennä vähän tutkailemaan lähimaastoja Heidelbergin lähistöllä. Suunnitteilla meillä on mennä käymään joskus lähiviikkoina Freiburgissa vähän sukuloimassa ja kavereita katsomassa. Toivon mukaan tämä ah-niin-ihana sade loppuu mahdollisimman nopeasti, että päästään suunnittelemaan!

Ai niin ja joo, tiedän, nykyinen header on ihan hirveä. Kikkailin sen kanssa iäisyyksiä, kunnes luovutin ja iskin sen tuohon. Lopputulos ei ole ollenkaan sellainen kuin ajattelin, joten se lähtee vaihtoon asap!

Autumn in Heidelberg

We have been now in Heidelberg for little over a week and now it seems autumn has arrived here too! The leaves are slowly turning yellow, red and brown and chestnuts fill the forest pathways. Autumn is my favorite time of the year as it is so beautiful and cool.

Heidelbergissä oloa takana vähän yli viikko ja nyt rupeaa näyttämään siltä, että syksy on saapunut myös tänne! Lehdet ovat hiljalleen ruvenneet vaihtamaan värejään punaiseksi, keltaiseksi ja ruskeaksi ja metsän polut täyttyvät kastanjoista. Syksy on ehdottomasti lempivuodenaikani kauneuden ja sopivan lämmön vuoksi.

On Mondays I don't have anything in the morning, so me and Afri decided to go to the woods in the late morning to enjoy the great sunny weather and beautiful nature. Usually at around 10.30 on weekdays there are no people in the nearby forest. Today however, it seems many had decided to go and pick chestnuts and collect water from the well at the same time as us.

Maanantaisin minulla ei ole tunteja tai töitä aamupäivisin, joten mentiin Afrin kanssa nautiskelemaan ihanan aurinkoisesta säästä ja kauniista luonnosta. Yleensä aamupäivinä 10.30 aikaan läheisessä metsässä ei ole oikeastaan yhtään ihmisiä liikkeellä. Jostain syystä tänään muutkin olivat päättäneet lähteä lenkkeilemään ja poimimaan kastanjoita samaan aikaan kun me oltiin liikenteessä.

Afri is clearly feeling much better compared to last week. Last Monday we did the forest walk in the morning before going to the vet and she was dead tired afterwards. It was like having a strange dog on the leash; she was walking very slow with her head down and eyes half closed. Today, there was no sign of such, Afri was her usual self sniffing and exploring! :)  

Africa voi selvästi paljon paremmin viime viikkoon verrattuna. Viime Maanantaina kävimme aamulla saman metsälenkin ennen eläinlääkärille menoa. Lenkin jälkeen Afri oli aivan loppu, oli kuin narun päässä olisi ollut ihan vieras koira, joka liikkui niin väsyneenä ja apaattisena. Tänään tuo väsyneisyys ei ollut kuin muisto vain, kun neiti posotti iloisesti eteenpäin niinkuin  yleensä. :)

Evening Sun

So that post "Last Days of Summer"? Kind of a lie! 

Summery sort of weather has continued for basically the whole of this week, it's been a nice +20ish degrees. Pretty awesome, there's still a couple of summery days left :)

Niin, yksi edellisistä postauksista oli nimeltään hieman harhaanjohtava, sillä kesä ei sitten kuitenkaan vielä loppunutkaan. Ja hyvä niin! Tällä viikolla lämpimät säät ovat jatkuneet ja on ollut ihanaa nauttia vielä lämmöstä ja auringosta. :)

Run Forest run!

One thing I've been looking for recently is a beginner's course in Agility for Africa, which has proved to be difficult! In Helsinki, the courses are almost always totally full or then when not, the prices are so high that I just feel it'd be a bit too much to pay over 70 e for a course including 4 times... The other problem has also been the fact that often these beginner's courses are meant for puppies. Afri being 4 and not so little, she can't really pass for a puppy. Thus I looked into some of the neighbouring cities, if they would have anything for us for September. 

Nyt ollessamme vielä Suomessa, olen yrittänyt katsoa josko Africalle löytyisi Agilityn alkeiskurssi, joka on ollut kertakaikkiaan hankalaa! Helsingissä suuren koiranharrastajamäärän vuoksi, kurssien löytäminen on ollut vaikeata tai sitten hinnat ovat olleet niin huimia, etten ole viitsinyt sellaisellekaan ilmoittautua. Yli 70 e neljältä kerralta on mielestäni jo aika paljon. Monet alkeiskurssit ovat usein olleet myös enemmän pennuille suunnattuja. Afrihan on hieman vauvamaisesta luonteestaan huolimatta kuitenkin 4 eikä enää niin kovin pieni, niin raukka ei oikein pennusta enää menisi :) Siispä vilkuilin josko naapurikaupungeista löytyisi jotain meille syyskuuksi.

Bingo! Immediately found a nice sounding beginner's course for adult dogs! I was pretty much jumping for joy, because their schedule fitted ours pretty much perfectly despite being on a weekday. Then as I was reading the course description more carefully, I realized that it was FULL! :( I did email the people there asking if we could be perhaps put on the waiting list just in case someone decides to cancel. We did get on the list, now paws crossed that a place opens up!

Ja bingo! Sitten onnistuinkin löytämään meille sopivan kuuloisen alkeiskurssin juuri aikuisille koirille! Olin todella innoissani, sillä sen ajankohdat sopivat meidän aikatauluun loistavasti, vaikka se olikin viikonpäivänä. Valitettavasti huomasin sitten harmikseni, että kurssi olikin jo TÄYNNÄ :( Meilasin kuitenkin heille (Koirakeidas) heti ja kyselin, että josko oli mahdollista saada peruutuspaikka siltä varalta, että joku päättikin perua. Pääsimme jonoon, ja nyt tassut ristiin, että meille aukenisi paikka! :)

Today we visited the stable and I once and for all had enough of my camera! For all of my pictures posted here on the blog I've used my Canon IXUS (can't remember the number) digicamera, which is good in taking still photos but just not good enough in taking ones involving movement. I have a large "proper" camera too, but lost the charger and USB cable. I decided it's time to get that fixed as the blurriness is starting to annoy me slightly. 

Tänään kävimme talleilemassa ja nyt sain oikeasti tarpeekseni nykyisestä kamerastani! Kaikkiin blogini kuviin olen käyttänyt ihan perus Canon IXUS (en muista numeroa)-pokkaria, joka on ihan ok ottaessaan paikallaan olevista asioista kuvia, mutta ei taasen vain ole kylliksi hyvä ottamaan liikkuvista asioista kuvia. Erityisesti koskee muuan erittäin liikkuvaa mustaa koiraa ;). Järjestelmäkamera minulta löytyy jo entuudestaan, mutta se on jäänyt viime vuosina käyttämätä, koska olen onnistunut hukkaamaan USB piuhan plus vielä laturin. Päätin, että nyt on aika saada se taas kuntoon, koska olen kyllästynyt epätarkkuuteen.

Both me and Afri had received some not so nice souvenirs from Mother Nature; Afri had a tick on her ear, and I found a deer fly on my neck when driving back home. Ughhh! 

Saimme Afrin kanssa ei-niin-kivoja tuliaisia luonnosta: Afrilta löytyi punkki korvan päältä ja multa löytyi kaulasta hirvikärpänen kotimatkalla. Hyihyi!

Forest Wandering

These pictures were actually taken a few weeks ago but I never got around to posting them. We were at the stable visiting Skessa and Afri got to do a bit of running around in the forest.

Nämä kuvat otettiin jo itseasiassa muutama viikko sitten, mutta en sitten päässyt niitä postailemaan kun blogi vaihtoi patformia ja vähän niinkuin unohdin niiden olemassaolon. Oltiin talleilemassa ja samalla Afri pääsi vähän metsään riehumaan kaverinsa kanssa.

Man have I missed the Finnish woods! In Heidelberg the forest is also very nice and all, but I can never compare other forests to that of Finland. There's just this peace and transquility that is incomparable.

Tajusin  metsässä olessani, miten olenkaan kaivannut ehtoja suomalaisia metsiä! Heidelbergin metsät ovat myös ihan kivoja, mutta jotenkin niitä tai muita metsiä ei vaan pysty vertaamaan Suomeen. Ehkä se johtuu niiden rauhallisuudesta? Jotain erilaista siellä kuitenkin on.
