On top of Heidelberg

About 2 weeks ago I decided it was time for us to hike up to Königstuhl, the highest point of Heidelberg. Now I've been to Königstuhl once before approximately 2 years ago but never walked the way up. I decided that now was the time to walk all the way to the top with Afri!

Noin 2 viikkoa sitten päätin, että voisimme African kanssa kävellä ylös Königstuhliin. Königstuhl on Heidelbergin korkein kohta ja pääasiassa tarkoitettu ihan vaan näköalapaikaksi. Königstuhl sijaitsee n. 567 m korkeudessa vuoren päällä. Tosin jos täkäläisille puhuu vuoresta, tulet saamaan osaksesi naurua (Heidelbergin vuoria pidetään täällä mäkinä...)

Königstuhl is located 567 m up on a hill. It has one of the most amazing views of Heidelberg, where one can fully appreciate the beauty of this charming city. Königstuhl is one of the main attractions in Heidelberg, reachable either via the Bergbahn from Altstadt or then the hard way (aka what we did) which is walking up. The path is pretty much uphill all the way, but you do get a pretty good leg workout plus it's great for over energetic pooches who never seem to tire (aka Africa).

Königstuhl tarjoaa uskomattoman kauniin näköalan koko Heidelbergiin, jonka vuoksi se onkin yksi suosituimpia turistikohteita. Helpoiten snne pääsee ottamalla Altstadtin Bergbahn ylös, tai sitten vaikeamman kautta kävelemällä (meidän valinta) yksinkertaisesti ylös. Reitti on lähes pelkästään mäkeä ylös, mutta siinä saa samalla itselle hyvän jalkatreenin ja jopa ADHD koiran vähän väsytettyäkin.

Our initial plan was to take the bus up to Königstuhl and then walk down some path and hopefully end up home at some point. The bus 39 goes straight to Königstuhl (for those who want to skip the whole walking uphill part). Now, the only problem with the bus is that first of all, it does not go very often ( approximately every 30 min-1 h) and that you really need to pay close attention to the stop schedules, for it does not always go all the way up to Königstuhl. This is what happened in our case...

Alkuperäinen suunitelma oli napata bussi ylös Königstuhliin ja sitten kävellä sieltä alas ja toivon mukaan löytää kotiin asti. Bussi 39 menee suoraan Königstuhliin (kolmas vaihtoehto päästä ylös). 39:n ongelma on valitettavasti se, että se menee melko harvoin (n. 30 min-1 h) ja pysäkkiaikatauluihin pitää ehdottoman tarkaan kiinnittää huomiota, sillä bussi ei aina mene Königstuhliin asti. Näin pääsi käymään meille...

The "quality" of the paths vary greatly and because of this you should opt for nice sturdy shoes. Now, most of the paths are nice and wide, very comfortable to walk on. The nice thing about the Rohrbach woods is the fact that you have directions of places carved on some of the larger boulders near the paths. However, don't trust them blindly! We followed a small path to Sprunghöhe, but instead ending up there, it took us into the bushes and the whole path suddenly dissapeared completely. But they are good in giving you an approximate idea of direction.

Metsäpolkujen "laatu" vaihtelee aikalailla, jonka vuoksi kannattaa varata itselleen mukaan hyvin kulutusta kestävät sopivan napakat kengät. Suurin osa poluista on kivan leveitä ja pohjaltaan kivoja, eli kaikinpuolin hyviä kävelemiseen. Mutta toiset taasen saattavat olla hyvinkin kapeita ja kivisiä. Rohrbachin metsien hyvä puoli on myös se, että tienviittoja on ripoteltu pitkin metsiä. Niihin ei kuitenkaan kannata aivan sokeasti luottaa! Terveisin eräät, jotka tienviittaa seuraamalla päätyivät pusikkoon, jossa polku sitten yhtäkkiä hävisi. Ne antavat kuitenkin hieman osviittaa siihen missä suunnassa on mikä.

In the Depths of the Forest...

Whilst on our walk to the Rohrbach woods Afri and I came across something rather spectacular!

This is the Ehrenfriedhof, a graveyard for those who fought in the first World War. The thing that makes this place kind of special is the fact that it is almost literally in the middle of a forest!

Oltiin African kanssa Rohrbachin metsässä ja löydettiin sen keskeltä jotain aika jännää! Metsän keskeltä löytyi Ehrenfriedhof, joka on siis hautausmaa niille jotka kuolivat ensimmäisessä Maailman Sodassa. Niinkuin sanottu, tämä paikka on tosiaan lähes keskellä metikköä!

We decided to take a different route from our usual one and that is how we stumbled here. The Ehrenfriedhof is almost 300 m high up! It was as if we had stepped into a whole new world. I was completely in awe of this place and cursed for not having a camera with me the first time we found it. Two days later however we returned and these are some of the pictures I took (mostly of Afri).

Päätimme mennä eri reittiä kuin yleensä ja niinhän me tänne sitten päädyttiinkin. Ehrenfriedhof on melkein 300 m korkeudella! Tuntui kuin olisimme astuneet ihan kokonaan toiseen maailmaan tullessamme tänne. Harmittelin kovasti ensimmäisellä kerralla tänne löydettyämme kameran puuttumista. Pari päivää myöhemmin palasimme kuitenkin takaisin ja tässä siis muutamia kuvia, joita tuli silloin otettua (pääasiassa Afrista).

Last weekend Africa and I headed to the pet shop to get some treats and something that I've been thinking of getting Afri for a long time. (Pictures taken during Easter in Rohrbach/Leimen)

The clicker! Afri is a very "conditionable" type of dog and I figured that clicker training would benefit us greatly. And right I was!

I've been using clicker training for Afri now since last Saturday and I am already kind of amazed by its results. First of all, Afri learned very fast that after a click she always gets a treat. When she didn't get the click, she would try to offer me everything possible and stare at the clicker in a rather expecting sort of fashion. Her motivation is on a whole different level after introducing the clicker into our sessions. For a Hovawart, Africa has always been an exceptionally fast learner. Her concentration isn't the best, which then requires me to keep the training interesting, short and fun. 

With the clicker, I can keep our sessions a little more repetitive than usual. Normally, she is not a big fan of repetition; Africa finds it boring, loses interest and simply leaves the scene to do something else. Now, she can't get enough and is actually asking me to do the training sessions with her!  

Just Another Manic Monday

Monday's usually our forest and errand day. Sadly today we couldn't go to the forest due to the woods being filled with various sorts of machines and all the usual paths being blocked and filled with "Danger, do not enter!"-signs. I'm not exactly sure what is being done, but from the sounds and looks of it, trees were being cut down. We were both a bit dissapointed with Afri, as the weather was so nice (not anymore, thanks rain!). There was a lot of construction etc. going on on our way up to the woods. The construction workers were really nice when they saw us, they stopped drilling (it was reallyreally loud!) and waited for us to pass by until they continued. So nice to see people who consider dogs' ears too as they hear that stuff 5 times louder than we do. Little things like that always make my day.:)

We ended up just hiking up towards the forest and then snaking around Weststadt. Bummer! On Sunday a 3-4 h hike is being organized and I would love to join with Afri. The medication has been working well for Afri and there have been no side effects so far.:). But she's still at a stage where we need to take it kind of easy at least for the next 2-3 weeks. Think next weekend we might be doing our own little hike somewhere close to Heidelberg. I am also planning on us doing a little weekend trip to Freiburg to visit relatives and friends. Hopefully this rain will stop soon!

The current header is dead ugly, I was messing around with it for ages until I got tired and decided to just slap this on. The outcome is not at all what I aimed for, so new proper header coming asap!

Maanantai on yleensä meidän metsä ja asioimispäivä täällä Heidelbergissä. Harmiksemme emme tänään päässeet metsään, sillä polut olivat täynnä erilaisia vempaimia ja ängetty täyteen "Hengenvaara, pääsy kielletty!"-kylttejä. En oikeastaan ole varma mitä ne siellä tekee, mutta äänestä päätellen puunkaatoa. Molemmat oltiin vähän pettyneitä, kun sää oli vielä niin kiva (ei ole tosin enää, kiitos sade!). Muutenkin mennessämme metsään päin, tiet oli täynnä kaikkea rakennusjutskaa. Rakennusmiehet olivat todella ystävällisiä, sillä he lopettivat hetkeksi poraamisen kun kävelimme ohi. Porasta tuli niin järkyttävä meteli, mikä sattui omiin korviini kuulokkeista huolimatta, saati sitten Afri-parka, joka koirana kuule sen vielä 5 kertaa kovempaa. Tuollaiset pienet asiat tekevät ainakin minun päivästäni aina iloisemman. :)

Käytiin sitten ihan vaan vaeltelemassa ylöspäin metsää kohti ja kierrellen Weststadtia. Sunnuntaina järkätään 3-4 h kivaa reittiä menevä vaellus, johon olisin mielelläni Afrin kanssa osallistunut. Lääkitys on toiminut Afrilla hyvin eikä sivuoireita ole ilmaantunut tähän mennessä.:) Siltikin Afri on vielä sellaisessa vaiheessa, että pitää ottaa vielä seuraavat pari viikkoa suht iisisti. Ensi viikonloppuna ajattelin, että voitaisiin mennä vähän tutkailemaan lähimaastoja Heidelbergin lähistöllä. Suunnitteilla meillä on mennä käymään joskus lähiviikkoina Freiburgissa vähän sukuloimassa ja kavereita katsomassa. Toivon mukaan tämä ah-niin-ihana sade loppuu mahdollisimman nopeasti, että päästään suunnittelemaan!

Ai niin ja joo, tiedän, nykyinen header on ihan hirveä. Kikkailin sen kanssa iäisyyksiä, kunnes luovutin ja iskin sen tuohon. Lopputulos ei ole ollenkaan sellainen kuin ajattelin, joten se lähtee vaihtoon asap!

Beautiful Weststadt

Weststadt is one of the areas/districts of Heidelberg, where we are living with Afri. It is absolutely my favorite area with its gorgeous Jugendstyle buildings, charming churches and small parks. It is in the perfect location, right next to the center yet far enough frmo all the typical hustle and bustle; pretty much perfect!

Weststadt on yksi Heidelbergin alueista ja juurikin se missä me Afrin kanssa asumme. Se on ehdottomasti lempialueeni upeine Jugend-tyylisine rakennuksineen, kauneine kirkkoineen ja pienine puistoineen. Sijainniltaan se on myös loistava, sillä Weststadt on ihan keskustan vieressä, mutta kuitenkin tarpeeksi kaukana melusta ja muusta. Meille siis täydellinen!

Today according to weather forecast, it was going to be +18 C. Pretty warm for the end of October, huh? The sun was shining so I thought it would be the perfect time to go for a walk with Africa around Weststadt and grab my camera whilst at it. Afri was in a great mood and got a lot of smiles during our walk. It could have perhaps been because of the fact that she looked so absolutely bored with me. We made quite a few stops where I would start snapping away and Afri would have most likely rolled her eyes if she were able to. :) 

Tämänpäiväisen sääennusteen mukaan asteita piti olla +18 C. Melko lämmintä lokakuun lopuksi kieltämättä! Aurinko paistoi ihanasti, joten ajattelin, että olisi mukava ottaa lenkillä vähän tarkemmin kuvia Weststadista. Africa oli hyvällä tuulella ja sai paljon hyväntahtoisia hymyjä ohikulkijoilta. Varmaankin sen vuoksi kun näytti niin kyllästyneeltä ja olisi varmasti pyöritellyt silmiään jos vain osaisi :). Tehtiin muutamia stoppeja, kun omistaja napsi kuvia kuin joku hullu :D.

Autumn in Heidelberg

We have been now in Heidelberg for little over a week and now it seems autumn has arrived here too! The leaves are slowly turning yellow, red and brown and chestnuts fill the forest pathways. Autumn is my favorite time of the year as it is so beautiful and cool.

Heidelbergissä oloa takana vähän yli viikko ja nyt rupeaa näyttämään siltä, että syksy on saapunut myös tänne! Lehdet ovat hiljalleen ruvenneet vaihtamaan värejään punaiseksi, keltaiseksi ja ruskeaksi ja metsän polut täyttyvät kastanjoista. Syksy on ehdottomasti lempivuodenaikani kauneuden ja sopivan lämmön vuoksi.

On Mondays I don't have anything in the morning, so me and Afri decided to go to the woods in the late morning to enjoy the great sunny weather and beautiful nature. Usually at around 10.30 on weekdays there are no people in the nearby forest. Today however, it seems many had decided to go and pick chestnuts and collect water from the well at the same time as us.

Maanantaisin minulla ei ole tunteja tai töitä aamupäivisin, joten mentiin Afrin kanssa nautiskelemaan ihanan aurinkoisesta säästä ja kauniista luonnosta. Yleensä aamupäivinä 10.30 aikaan läheisessä metsässä ei ole oikeastaan yhtään ihmisiä liikkeellä. Jostain syystä tänään muutkin olivat päättäneet lähteä lenkkeilemään ja poimimaan kastanjoita samaan aikaan kun me oltiin liikenteessä.

Afri is clearly feeling much better compared to last week. Last Monday we did the forest walk in the morning before going to the vet and she was dead tired afterwards. It was like having a strange dog on the leash; she was walking very slow with her head down and eyes half closed. Today, there was no sign of such, Afri was her usual self sniffing and exploring! :)  

Africa voi selvästi paljon paremmin viime viikkoon verrattuna. Viime Maanantaina kävimme aamulla saman metsälenkin ennen eläinlääkärille menoa. Lenkin jälkeen Afri oli aivan loppu, oli kuin narun päässä olisi ollut ihan vieras koira, joka liikkui niin väsyneenä ja apaattisena. Tänään tuo väsyneisyys ei ollut kuin muisto vain, kun neiti posotti iloisesti eteenpäin niinkuin  yleensä. :)
